Support to FAO in updating and validating Technical Conversion Factors (TCFs) for SUA/FBS, including data review, questionnaire design, collection, and validation

ProcureProcess - FAO Others Non Governmental 2025-11-14 to 2025-11-28
The FAO Statistics Division compiles and publishes Supply Utilization Accounts (SUA) and Food Balance Sheets (FBS) annually, which include extensive agricultural data from multiple sources. The compilation of FBS relies on country-specific norms documented in the Technical Conversion Factors (TCF) manual. The Technical Conversion Factors cover: 1.       Seeding rates: Amount of a primary commodity, expressed in kilograms per hectare, used for sowing purposes. 2.       Extraction rates: Extraction rates refer to the amount of the processed product obtained from the processing of a unit of the parent/originating product, in most cases a primary product. 3.       Take-off rates: number of animals removed from herds for slaughter or export for cattle, buffalo, sheep, goat, pigs, chicken, and other animals (where important). 4.       Live weight and carcass weight: average live and dressed weights of slaughtered animals for cattle, buffalo, sheep, goat, pigs, chicken, and other animals (where important). 5.       Milk yield: average milk yield per milking animal per year for cattle, buffalo, sheep, goats and other milking animals (where important) 6.       Egg yield: average number of eggs per laying animal per year for hens and other animals (where important) 7.       Edible offals and slaughter fats: weight of by-products per unit of live weight of animals obtained during carcass preparation for cattle, buffalo, sheep, goat, pigs and other animals (where important). The TCFs were originally compiled by FAO in 1960 and later updated in 1972 and 1996. The current norms (Link), almost 30 years old, are now outdated and no longer represent present-day agricultural production conditions in many countries. Thus, an update of the TCF document is necessary to ensure the accuracy, consistency, and relevance of the data feeding into SUA/FBS and FAOSTAT outputs.
