EXPRESSION OF INTEREST No. 2025/001 - Provision of technical advisory and capacity strengthening services to farmers to enhance rice-fish integrated farms

ProcureProcess - FAO Liberia Non Governmental 2025-02-27 to 2025-03-21
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is implementing a project titled “Strengthening Capacities in the Fisheries and Rice Cultivation Sectors for Food Security and Nutrition Improvement” coded GCP/LIR/032/JPN. The project is being implemented in collaboration with the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority (NaFAA) of Liberia. This project comes in response to the fact that food and nutrition security remains a challenge in Liberia. Towards addressing these challenges, the government, supported by partners, continue to make varying-level interventions, aimed at strengthening the relevant sub-sectors. Rice, as a food crop, plays a key role in household diets and ranks, as the country’s staple, whilst fish serves as main source of protein. Despite its key role, national average rice yield has been at a sub-regional low of 1.18 metric tonne per hectare. At the same time, marine fisheries production is less-than optimal, partly because adequately capacitating and equipping fisher folks to stay safe and healthy at ocean and undo post-catch losses remain unfulfilled in all nine coastal fishing counties. As a result of these challenges, FAO and NaFAA is implementing the rice-fish integrated agriculture-aquaculture farms with the aim of increasing production in both rice and fish to alleviate poverty and malnutrition. FAO Liberia intends to enter a service contract with a suitably qualified partner (e.g. University, Fisheries & Aquaculture Research Institute, Agency, Consultant, Consultancy….) that will deliver a range of services if selected. The project will be based in Bong County, Central Liberia where 10 communities have been earmarked to receive this intervention. A total of not less than 5 hectares of lowland rice fields is to be fully developed and functional with incorporated fish farming benefiting not less than 150 farmers.
