Review of Evidence and Innovation on Scientific, Regulatory, and Financing Frameworks for Safe and Effective Traditional Medicine

ProcureProcess - WHO Others Non Governmental 2025-03-07 to 2025-04-15
The purpose of this Request for Proposals is to identify a suitable contractor to provide a detailed safety and effectiveness profile of six widely used herbs globally, one from each WHO region, focusing on informing consumers and healthcare providers about potential risks and safety. It will also present policy recommendations to enhance Evidence and Innovation on Scientific, Regulatory, and Financing Frameworks for Safe and Effective Traditional Medicine, and promoting safer healthcare applications. This report aligns with the World Health Organization's (WHO) goals by advocating for evidence-based practices in traditional medicine and supporting the integration of these practices into national health systems while ensuring safety and efficacy. By assessing safety and efficacy parameters and regulatory frameworks, the report will aid countries in meeting their requests for guidance on safe herbal practices, ultimately improving global healthcare quality. The necessity for this report arises from requests made by WHO Member States, as highlighted in the "WHO Global Report on Traditional & Complementary Medicine (T&CM) 2019." These requests emphasize the need for evidence-based data on traditional medicine, support for monitoring herbal products, and regulation of T&CM advertising. Additionally, the report aligns with WHO's TM strategy 2025-2034 objectives, facilitating coordination among stakeholders like regulatory bodies and researchers to promote safety monitoring and regulatory improvements in traditional herb use.
