EXPRESSION OF INTEREST FOR CLIMATE RESILIENT INFRASTRUCTURE FOR BASIC SERVICES (CRIBS) IN 6 STATES OF NIGERIA. UNICEF Nigeria is leading the implementation of the Climate Resilient Infrastructure for Basic Services (CRIBS), an approach funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO). CRIBS is an effort to integrate climate resilience into the infrastructure of primary healthcare centers (PHCs) and schools in low resource settings. The original concept and tools were developed in Nigeria, with the first phase aimed at demonstrating, and testing a scalable model of climate-resilient and sustainable health and education facilities that can be adapted and adopted by State Governments and agencies to strengthen climate resilience and minimize emissions as part of health and education development planning as well as routine rehabilitation and repair of facilities. The project will retrofit and upgrade existing PHCs and schools, with interventions including installation of solar power systems to provide off-grid electricity, drilling of boreholes to depths that ensure year around and long-term access to clean water, integrating flood and storm defenses, improving sanitation infrastructure, modifying buildings for improved airflow and thermal comfort, among others. These upgrades are guided by climate risk assessments to ensure that each facility is tailored to the specific environmental vulnerabilities of its location. All activities will adhere to UNICEF’s quality and safety standards to ensure long-term sustainability. By enhancing climate-resilience of PHC and school infrastructure, the project will safeguard critical services in vulnerable regions from climate-related disruptions, including heatwaves, flooding, drought, and infrastructure degradation. Many schools and health facilities in Nigeria operate without reliable access to clean water, stable energy, or safe sanitation—conditions that are exacerbated by a changing climate.
