UNDP Vietnam is looking for a qualified National Consultant to prepare technical report on Vietnam’s blue carbon potential with a focus on seagrass to inform Vietnam’s Nationally Determined Contribution 3.0 (NDC 3.0) Viet Nam faces significant impacts from global climate change, with its coastal zones and low-lying river deltas at heightened risk. Between 2000 and 2019, Viet Nam was the thirteenth most affected country globally by climate-related loss events, according to the Global Climate Risk Index 2021[1]. Indeed, the areas along Viet Nam’s 3,260-kilometre-long coastline experience saline intrusion, droughts, coastal degradation and erosion, storm surges, typhoons, and floods[2]. Contingent upon Viet Nam’s emissions pathway, it is estimated that between six and twelve million people will be affected by coastal flooding by 2070-2100 without effective adaptation action[3]. The assignment will contribute to enhancing the scientific basis and ambition of NDC 3.0, ensuring that seagrass is recognized not only as critical nature-based solutions for climate mitigation and resilience, but also as valuable assets for sustainable coastal development.
