Project Rationale At the margins of the 2024 African Union Summit, UNECA and BADEA held bilateral meetings and discussed strategies for enhancing the Botswana beef sector and to expand exports beyond traditional export markets, including Gulf areas and Northern Africa the United Arab Emirates (UAE). It was agreed that the two institutions would conduct a field mission to assess Botswana’s beef value chain and assess its potential for growth, including the inclusion of small-scale breeders/ small stock/traditional farming, and propose an action plan to enhance the domestic value chain and potential regional value chains. This meeting sparked interest to explore collaboration opportunities with the Botswana government and private sector on the initiative. Consequently, a mission to Botswana was undertaken between 2nd to 6th April 2024 by BADEA and UNECA Objective The objective of this consultancy assignment is to assess Botswana’s beef value chain for the development of an inclusive competitive industry for beef exports and upstream products including at the regional level. A key output to this is the development of a timeframe-bounded roadmap, identifying key actions along with responsible actors. Among others, the roadmap should also include (1) an inclusive quality assurance scheme for the Botswana Beef Value Chain that is traceable and verifiable, with strong involvement of the private sector; (2) capacity development programmes to enable small-scale cattle farmers to produce beef of high export quality; and (3) establishment of interrelated downstream and upstream value chain development for Botswana’s beef sector and producers in the region. This includes animal feed, leather and leather products and gelatin. The roadmap should also outline marketing strategies to expand Botswana’s beef exports beyond traditional export markets, including Gulf and Northern Africa countries, and other high-end markets in a more transparent and sustainable manner.
