ITB: FEASIBILITY STUDY FOR INSTALLATION OF SOLAR-POWERED IRRIGTION FACILITIES IN SIX (6) DISTRICTS IN NORTHERN GHANA

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations is implementing a food security project funded by the European Union (EU). The EU food security response in Northern Ghana project is promoting crop-specific, agro-ecological systems and approaches and support the sustainable development of maize, millet, sorghum, soyabean, groundnut, vegetables (tomato), poultry and piggery value chains. In selected project locations, direct agricultural inputs provision, accompanied by support to climate-adapted agricultural practices, provision of improved grain storage technologies, training on good agronomic and post-harvest practices, promotion of organic fertilizers use, provision of solar powered irrigation solutions and application of other climate sensitive and sustainable Agri-techniques, promotion of integrated pests and diseases management approaches and facilitation of access to market as well as value addition for crops produced will help in resolving some of the production and post-harvest bottlenecks and contribute to achieving food security, and enhanced resilience to shocks and disasters. To achieve its objective of providing solar powered irrigation solutions and application in its selected districts, solar powered boreholes will be constructed/installed to provide access sustainable/renewable energy and water for all year production hence, the need for a feasibility study in the six selected districts. Hence, FAO intends to engage a service provider to do a ‘feasibility Study for the installation of solar-powered Irrigation facilities in six (6) districts in Northern Ghana
