General objectives The research has two complementary objectives: Strengthen the evidence base on the root causes of child labour in cocoa farming, with a focus on migrant children. Provide evidence-based recommendations to policymakers, cocoa industry stakeholders and producers to address the root causes of child labour and of precarious migration in order to achieve an economically, socially and environmentally sustainable supply chain free of child labour. Specific objectives: Understanding the scope and dynamics of child labour and migration in cocoa-growing communities Document the existence of child trafficking for labour exploitation in cocoa production and how it intersects with broader patterns of child migration and child labour in cocoa-growing communities Assess the root causes of child labour in the production of cocoa in target areas at the household, community and industry level, with a focus on migrant children Provide policy recommendations on how to prevent and eliminate child labour and child trafficking in the production of cocoa, with a focus on migrant children from the northern regions of Ghana and trafficked children Produce, present and disseminate to the government, employers’ and workers’ organizations and other stakeholders, a comprehensive report on the characteristics and vulnerabilities of children in child labour in cocoa growing communities, with a focus on children migrating from the Northern Regions and child trafficking
